It generally made it into Facerig, but without any animation to interpret my face, it was stuck in a T-pose. In what was probably a fatal mistake, I decided to use the geometry file as the idle: I didn’t care that it was broken I only wanted to see if I could bring the model into the program. Unfortunately, my 3D experience never extended to animation, so I couldn’t even create an idle. Several sets of animations need to be assigned to generate facial expressions, mouth phonemes, eye movements, finger and hand bending, etc.

The bare minimum was a single idle animation, but it’s best if you include a full suite. Thinking I was set, I immediately hit a roadblock: After trying to do the import, there was an error message saying you are required to also assign animations to the model. The shaders were set to whatever was appropriate, but they seem to just make more textures available for assignment. Since VRoid relies significantly on alpha blended textures, most of them were set to alpha. The tool has a set of spreadsheets indicated the autodetected texture assignments, which I adjusted manually, but the alpha blending and shader had to be declared manually. A couple of warnings occured: There was no camera in the geometry file, and there were too many bones above the recommended number 198 instead of 52. Putting everything in the same folder to be read, I ran the import tool. The main type suffixes were d for diffuse, b for normal, and s for specular.

Renaming them was simple enough that I could batch rename them. The textures had three names separated by underscores: model, material, and type. The model had to have a suffix of Geometry, to indicate that it wasn’t an animation (ie. In order to be processed more easily by Facerig’s import wizard, they all had to be renamed.

CUSTOM FACERIG AVATAR MAKER PORTABLE

ABIC had a portable version, which was a plus. I have never used this before, but it said that it was a fork of a fork of ImageMagick, which was my go-to in the past. While the attempt on CG Method converted them manually in Photoshop, I opted to batch convert them to TGA using Advanced Batch Image Converter (ABIC). dae, without any optimisations.Īfter running the VRM Importer, the PNG textures were extracted. Since it was only a proof-of-concept attempt, I decided to immediately export it to. I also initially aimed to use Blender 2.79, but the 2.79 version of the VRM Importer was mothballed. However, it turned out that instead of having its own VRM implementation, it relied on the VRM Importer too. I’m not sure if the VRM Importer has been retired, as repos are set to read-only, so I looked at CATS first. I did the conversion with a combination of Blender 2.82, the VRM Importer plugin, and the CATS plugin.

VRM is an extension of the glTF intermediary format with PNG textures, and Facerig expects the Collada (.dae) intermediary format with Targa (.tga) textures. The first stage is converting the files into the right format. After skimming the Facerig documentation and a Japanese attempt at CG Method of the same thing, I ended up not getting far at all. While I would still need to do a lot of conversion, I hypothesised that I could probably hack together a proof of concept. However, since Facerig predates the creation of any community standard, I didn’t know what was required to bring a VRoid model in.

It uses a commercially licensed solution instead of an open one, and it’s even capable of eye tracking, all with an old 480p webcam. It arguably remains as the best face tracking option in the field. With the next generation starting to emerge with VRoid and VRM facilitating easier character usage, I never got it until it was gifted to me recently. It’s a pretty inexpensive choice, but I couldn’t justify the purchase. However, the developers are now dropping support and are replacing it with Animaze, which claims to fix Facerig’s problems. Vtubers have never used Facerig seriously. It’s already not worth trying, for the reasons detailed below.
